A classic Grande Cuvee showcasing exuberant freshness and ripe softness (quite how chef de cave Eric Lebel pulls this off never ceases to amaze me). This particular blend includes 130 reserve wines from a dozen vintages, with the youngest base wine being the 2004 - of course, therein lies Lebel’s secret! There’s some attractive bottle-age maturity that is just beginning to emerge from the more primary citrus, apple and pomegranate fruit, which segues into creamy almond, honeycomb, papaya, acacia and spice. It has a lovely weight and mouthfeel with lots of structured vinosity. The finish is dry, autolytic, savoury and long.
This is a broad, meaty release of Grande Cuvee, a wine with stature and enough tension in its structure to handle the substantial girth. Subtle notes of black tea, bergamot and lemon pith hint at the range of older and fresher reserve wines in this blend. It would make a festive occasion out of a crispy roast chicken with sage under the skin.
Krug’s NV Grand Cuvee 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvees of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring.
Beautifully aromatic and inviting, with grilled nut, incense and graphite notes, this vibrant Champagne is finely knit and harmonious, expanding on the palate and delivering flavors of toast, lemon meringue, orange blossom and clover honey. The long finish features lots of exotic spice details. Disgorged winter 2013. Drink now through 2025. From France.-A.N.
This multivintage blend nails the essence of Krug, intense richness of fruit and flavor without weight. Meaty mushroom and soy aromas are balanced by rich red fruits, citrus, toast and mineral notes. Long finish. Score: 94. Joe Czerwinski, December 01, 2005.
Oddly, the most consistent Krug wine I have been tasting lately is their non-vintage Brut Grand Cuvee, a big, boldly styled Champagne with smoky, earthy, pear, apple, and spicy aromas as well as flavors, loads of effervescence, and fine body and depth. Score: 93. Robert Parker, December 2005.
