Earthy aromas of ripe black cherry, porcini mushroom, menthol, game and moist just-tilled soil slowly make their way to the forefront. The aromas carry over to the chewy concentrated palate along with a hint of tobacco while buffed tannins provide smooth support. It’s savory and already accessible. Drink through 2023.
Expressive and flavourful with aromas of red and black cherry, coffee bean and a hint of balsamic. It is ripe and powerful, balanced by good acidity with woody notes and a slight bitter finish. Needs more time in bottle.
Super-ripe black cherry, blackberry, tobacco, cloves, French oak and new leather are front and center in Chiarlo’s 2013 Barbera d’Asti Superiore Nizza La Court. This flamboyant, extroverted Barbera is already a touch forward, but it should drink well for at least another 2-3 years. The sweet, oak-driven style is stuck in the 1990s, but the 2013 is a good example of the style.
